Contract Research Services

Albemarle is one of the few firms in the world with the facilities and expertise to help you with product development at every stage, from contract research through commercial manufacturing.

At the R&D level, we can work with your technology, or we can use our extensive resources in chemistry and chemical engineering to develop, test and prove efficient new processes. Either way, you’ll benefit from decades of Albemarle scale-up experience with hundreds of products in dozens of industries.

A seasoned technical group made up of 16 PhD-level organic chemists supervises contract service operations in Albemarle research laboratories, kilo labs, and pilot plants. They’re supported by more than 100 scientists, including 27 total analytical staff, at Albemarle’s Process Development Center in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

It’s a talented, fast, and responsive team with an exceptional focus on solving customer problems. They’ll help you control development time and costs by thoroughly testing your process in research laboratories featuring state-of-the-art NMR, FTIR, UV/VIS, ICP, GC, HPLC, Mass spectrometry and other equipment.

Once the R&D work is done, they will stay with you during the kilo-lab or pilot-plant stage, ensuring consistency and a sense of ownership and accountability.

We are committed to being your long-term, service partner, and dedicated to your success. Contact us today to see how we can give you priority attention that most others simply can’t match.

Process development

With our expertise in process development, Albemarle’s Fine Chemistry Services group can help you turn your chemical concepts into commercial-scale products. We’ve done it before for ourselves and for customers like you in a wide range of industries from agriculture to pharmaceuticals, polymers and water treatment.

Kilo lab

Our cGMP-capable and non-GMP kilo labs can make future commercial products in the volumes you need to properly evaluate their performance.

That’s true of even the most challenging materials and reactions, because our equipment’s materials of construction range from the routine to the exotic. And thanks to facilities that support multiple operations in batch and continuous processes, you can get the samples at your convenience.

  • Baton Rouge, Louisiana: glass, stainless steel, and Hastelloy® reactors, stainless steel WFEs, basket centrifuges and tumble dryers, computer-controlled sample processing, and more.
  • Orangeburg, South Carolina: Reactors and autoclaves up to 100 liters in glass, filtration and distillation systems; cGMP HVAC systems; chilled glycol, and more.
  • Tyrone, Pennsylvania: Parr reactors from 300 ml to 2 liters, distillation systems, Roto-evaporators, walk-in hoods, compressed air and nitrogen, chilled glycol, and more.
  • South Haven, Michigan: Reactors and autoclaves up to 25 liters in glass, filtration and distillation systems; cGMP HVAC systems; chilled glycol, and more.
  • Louvain-la-Neuve, Belgium:  Reactors up to 50 liters in glass; in-process sampling; nutsche filter; azeotropic distillation; solid and liquids handing, and more.  For more information on Albemarle's Kilo lab in Europe, please click here.

Our chemical engineers and chemists, lab technicians and operators work in facilities designed specifically for process development, including multiple pilot plants and sample preparation units, as well as large-scale market development units with sophisticated automated control systems.

So you can count on Albemarle at any stage – bench development, pilot phase, sample production or market development. We can increase production volume to keep pace as your needs grow.

cGMP

cGMP outsourcing is one of the most effective ways to reduce "time to market," optimize your cost structure and streamline your operations. With more of your resources devoted to core pharmaceutical activities, your assets become more productive, and so does your marketing effort.

Quality intermediates and support from Albemarle let you focus more of your resources on drug discovery and marketing, and less on costly manufacturing facilities.

That’s why we’ve invested heavily in pharmaceutical ingredient manufacturing technology: so that you can maximize your return on clinical work at the front end, and on successful new product introductions at the back end.

Our commitment to the pharmaceutical industry is easy to see: Our bulk-active ibuprofen plant is the world’s largest. We feature a cGMP kilo lab and cGMP pilot plant at our South Haven, Michigan, facility.

The new cGMP unit includes several features to help make your products quickly and effectively:

Chemistry & Process Capabilities
A diverse array of compounds with varied chemical structures requiring:

  • Enzymatic Resolution
  • Homogeneous & Heterogeneous Catalysts
  • Heck, Suzuki, Buchwald Amination
  • Low Pressure Hydrogenation (60 psig)
  • Grignards
  • Thin Film Distillation
  • Handling of Hazardous Materials

50 to 4,000 gallon reactors (cGMP)

  • Glass, Stainless steel, Hastelloy alloy
  • Temperature capability: -20° C to 180° C

When coupled with our significant regulatory and DMF experience, and excellent US FDA track record in Orangeburg (only one minor 483 in more than 25 years of API production), we think that our expansion offers you a unique set of benefits.

As a result, our robust project pipeline has already begun filling with new cGMP business, and we expect this new business – like our renowned heritage in bromine fine chemistry – to provide a base for future fine chemistry services growth.
